49% of women who die in childbirth in South Africa are HIV+.
35% of children under the age of 5 who die in South Africa are HIV+.
Based on a voluntary survey of antenatal clinics across South Africa, 29.5% of the women tested positive for HIV/AIDS.
What this means is that South Africa is facing a potential social disaster.
By 2011, over 2 000 000 children in South Africa were AIDS double-orphans, ie they have lost both their parents to AIDS.
While the population of South Africa has grown at just over 15% over the last decade, the number of orphans has increased by 28%.
These figures are the motivation behind organisations like Children of the Dawn.
And Children of the Dawn is the motivation behind our latest little project.
Neither of us is trying to cure AIDS. That is the job of the people, companies and governments with more resources, expertise and financing.
What we are trying to do, by fund-raising, is to give these orphans a bit of hope and a fair chance at a life outside of this horror.
